DEFINITIONS
MYRMORNIS
(Thamnophilidae; Ϯ Southern Wing-banded Antbird M. torquata) Gr. μυρμηξ murmēx, μυρμηκος murmēkos or μυρμος murmos ant; ορνις ornis, ορνιθος ornithos bird; "Myrmornithis s) ... s) Hoc nomen dare visum est novo utique generi, quod Americæ proprium primum descriptum est a BUFFONIO T. VI. p. 462 & nomine Fourmilier propositum haud prorsus aptissimo, quum quadrupes animal avemque eodem nomine insigniti, & novis homonymiis, quarum veteres jam nimis negotii nobis facessunt, novis erroribus ansam dare non videatur esse consentaneum. (Hermann 1783); "Myrmornis Hermann, Tabula Affin. Anim., 1783, p. 180 [sic=188],1 210,2 235. Type, by subsequent designation, Fourmilier proprement dit, Buffon, 4, p. 473 = Le Fourmillier de Cayenne, Daubenton, Pl. enlum., pl. 700, fig. 1 = Formicarius torquatus Boddaert (Hellmayr, Field Mus. Nat. Hist. Publ., Zool. Ser., 13, pt. 3, 1924, p. 321). ... 1 Myrmornithis, genitive, hence not available under Opinion 183. 2 Myrmornithem, accustaive, hence not available under Opinion 183." (Peters 1951, VII, 255). Hermann here first uses the genitive case; elsewhere in the work he uses Myrmornithum, Myrmornin, Myrmornithem, and, finally, Myrmornis, in his tabular sequence between Upupa and Sitta.
