(Thamnophilidae; Ϯ White-plumed Antbird P. albifrons) Perhaps based on a Güaraní name used by de Azara 1802-1805, or a corrupt combination from genus Pipra Linnaeus, 1764, manakin, and Mod. L. thlypis  warbler (cf. Gr. πιτυς pitus  pine-tree; Gr. πυθιος puthios  Pythian, Delphian, an epithet of Apollo; Gr. πιτυλος pitulos  unidentified small bird mentioned by Hesychius); "PITHYS, Pithys; Pipra, Lath.  Bec plus large que haut à sa base, à bords déprimés, anguleux en dessus, échancré et courbé à sa pointe; tarses élevés; doigts extérieurs soudés jusqu'à la deuxième phalange; ailes arrondies et courtes.   ....   Le PITHYS A PLUMET BLANC ou MANICUP, Pithys leucops, Vieill.; Pipra albifrons, Lath.; pl. enl. de Buff., no. 707, fig. 1.  Le nom de manicup a été imposé à cet oiseau par contraction de manakin huppé, parce qu'on s'imaginoit, dit Buffon, que c'étoit, en effet, un manakin; mais, mieux observé, il s'est trouvé qu'il n'étoit point de ce genre; c'est pourquoi il a changé sa dénominationen l'appelant plumet blanc.   ...   Cet oiseau n'étant point, selon ma manière de voir, un manakin, ni un fourmilier, ni une pie-grièche, et ne pouvant entrer dans aucun genre connu, je le présente comme le type d'une nouvelle division qui a des rapports avec celle des manakins, des fourmiliers et des conopophages, mais plus rapprochée de ces derniers que des autres." Peru. Said to be named after Biru, a local Inca encountered by the conquistadores (although the name is also accredited to a Panamanian cazique). Until the early 18^th century the Viceroyalty of Peru included all Spanish possessions in South America.
