Eleos, from the Greek heleos, meaning swamp, refers to swampy forests, the preferred habitat of E. indigoticus and E. psychopompus; Scytalopus refers to the genus in which these two species were long included. Gender masculine" (Maurício et al. 2008); "Eleoscytalopus Maurício, Mata, Bornschein, Cadena, Alvarenga and Bonatto, 2008, Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 49 (1), p. 125+. Type, by original designation, Myiothera indigotica zu Wied, 1831." (JAJ 2021).
