DEFINITIONS
EMBERIZOIDES
(Thraupidae; † Wedge-tailed Grassfinch E. herbicola) Genus Emberiza Linnaeus, 1758, bunting; Gr. -οιδης -oidēs resembling; "EMBÉRIZOIDE LONGIBANDE. EMBERIZOIDES MARGINALIS. TEMM. (Temminck 1822); "Emberizoides Temminck, 1822, Pl. Col., livr. 19, text to pl. 114. Type, by subsequent designation (G. R. Gray, 1840, List. Genera Birds, ed. 1, p. 43), Emberizoides marginalis Temminck = Sylvia herbicola Vieillot." (Paynter in Peters, 1970, XIII, p. 129).
Synon. Chlorion, Tardivola.
• (Icteridae; syn. Agelaius † Red-winged Blackbird A. phoeniceus) "Emberizoides, some species of which Vieillot refers to his genus PASSERINA, they form the passage to FRINGILLA. This subgenus is so closely allied to the preceding [Xanthornus] that it would be perhaps better to unite them; the bill is only less acuminate" (Bonaparte 1825).
• (Passerellidae; syn. Chondestes † Lark Sparrow C. grammacus) It is not obvious from the text (Bonaparte 1831, Giornale Arcadico, 49, 51) that this is a replacement name for Chondestes (which precedes Emberizoides in his list of subgenera). However, in a later issue (Bonaparte 1832, Giornale Arcadico, 52, 206) is listed, "Chondestes, Swains. (Spiza Emberizoides, Nob.) Am. s.".
• (?Passeridae; syn. Passer † House Sparrow P. domesticus) "154. Fringilla, L. Cosmop. 1. Tardivola, Sw. (Emberizoides? Temm.) Am. m. 2. Spiza, Nob. (Passerina, Vieill. partim. Cynchramus, Boie. part.) Cosm. 1. Ammodramus, Sw. Am. 2. Megalotis, Sw. Am. Oc. 3. Chondestes, Sw. Am. 4. Emberizoides, Nob Cosm. 5. Tanagroides, Nob. Am." (Bonaparte, 1831, Saggio distrib. metodica animali vertebrati, p. 52). The identification here is speculative, and, considering the absence of Passer elsewhere in his classification, based solely on the cosmopolitan distribution of Bonaparte's new genus.

Il a entièrement la forme et les habitudes des Troupiales; mais il s'en éloigne cependant par son bec semblable à celui des Bruans. C'est ce caractère qui a déterminé le Cen.
