DEFINITIONS

SINOSUTHORA
(Sylviidae; Ϯ Spectacled Parrotbill S. conspicillata) Mod. English Sino-  Chinese-  < Late L. Sinae  Chinese  < Gr. Σιναι Sinai  Chinese; genus Suthora Hodgson, 1837, parrotbill; "Sinosuthora new genus  Diagnosis: small parrotbills 11-15cm in length. Relatively plain in coloration, with brown to rufous-chestnut-fringed wings; all lack pronounced lateral crown-stripes.  Type: Suthora conspicillata A. David, 1871.  Gender: feminine" (Penhallurick & Robson 2009). The Spectacled Parrotbill is confined to China, where all the other members of the genus are also found, with a few outlying populations in bordering countries.

“A single specimen of this new bird graces the national collection at the British Museum; to which it was presented by Mr. [J.] Webb, a gentleman who has been instrumental in introducing to our notice considerable collections of birds and quadrupeds from the neighbourhood of Shanghai in China ...  as a compliment to the donor of this and many other interesting birds to the British Museum” (Gould 1852).  Sauer 1995, lists “E. Webb. China” as a subscriber to Gould’s works.  Philip Barker Webb (1793-1854) English botanist, referred to in my previous dictionaries (per Wynne 1969), had no connection with China (Sinosuthora).

● "But if the finger were thrust through the bars he would fly at it with great fury, pecking and biting very hard, and charging again and again at it, each time with redoubled onslaught.  He was always ready for a fight, and seemed by his manner to challenge it.  ...   He was altogether the most pugnacious little bird I have ever seen  ...  I should like to introduce the species as  SUTHORA BULOMACHUS*, sp. nov.  ...  * βουλομαχος, qui cupit pugnare."
