DEFINITIONS

GRAMMATOPTILA
(Leiothrichidae; Ϯ Striated Laughingthrush G. striata) Gr. γραμμα gramma, γραμματος grammatos  line  < γραφω graphō  to write; πτιλον ptilon  feather; Reichenbach's 1850, plate LXXXV, labelled Coracinae et Garrulinae, highlights the streaked head and face of the Striated Laughingthrush; "Garr. pallide brunneus, subtus pallidior; corporis supra subtusque plumis in medio albo longitudinaliter striatis; crista verticali, remigibus, rectricibusque unicoloribus.  This latter species was observed to deviate in general colour and markings from the European species [Garrulus glandarius], although according in form; and in the former characters to exhibit a manifest approach to the Nutcrackers, or the genus Nucifraga of Brisson" (Vigors 1831); "Grammatoptila Reichenbach, 1850, Avium Syst. Nat., pl. 85. No species; generic details only. Type, by subsequent designation (G. R. Gray, 1855, Cat. Gen. Subgen. Birds, p. 45), Garrulus striatus Vigors." (Deignan in Peters, 1964, X, p. 349).
