"Παρδαλωτος, spotted like a panther. I think the original name was pardalonotus, παρδαλος, spotted, νωτον, back: a very applicable designation" (Ashmolean 1836)); "PARDALOTE, Pardalotus.  Pipra, Lath.  Bec très-court, un peu robuste, à base dilatée sur les bords, entier, conoïde, épais à la pointe; mandibule supérieure un peu arquée; l'inférieure convexe en dessous.   Esp. Probably from L. mille, millia  one thousand, with ref. to the heavily spotted plumage of the Spotted Pardalote, or a lapsus for L. militaris  military, alluding to the red upper tail-coverts and orange rump; "1,121A.  PARDALOTUS PUNCTATUS MILLITARIS, subsp. n.  Northern Spotted Pardalote.  Differs from P. p. punctatus in being darker above, lighter below, and in having a much heavier bill, shorter wing, and a more yellowish vent.  Type, Cairns, No. 13,837.  Range, Cairns, North Queensland."
