DEFINITIONS

LANIOCERA
(Tityridae; Ϯ Cinereous Mourner L. hypopyrra) Genus Lanius Linnaeus, 1758, shrike; Gr. κερας keras, κερως kerōs  horn (i.e. bill); "Genre Laniocera.  L. sanguinaria, Less. (famille des Pie-grièches). Bec droit, allongé, robuste, comprimé sur les côtés, dilaté et triangulaire à la base, à arête convexe, recourbée, crochue, fortement dentée. Mandibule inférieure redressée, échancrée à la pointe  ...   Tarses courts, gros, à doigts antérieurs courts, armés d'ongles crochus" (Lesson 1840); "Laniocera Lesson, 1840, Rev. Zool. [Paris], 3, p. 353. Type, by monotypy, Laniocera sanguinaria Lesson = Ampelis hypopyrra Vieillot." (Snow in Peters 1979, VIII, 192).
