(Threskiornithidae; Ϯ Southern Bald Ibis G. calvus) Late Gr. γεροντικως gerontikōs  like an old man (i.e. bald)  < Gr. γερων gerōn, γεροντος gerontos  old man; "32. Genus Geronticus Wagl., Kahlibis.   Rostrum gracile; pedes et ungues Theristici. Ptilosis: caput et pars colli (avis adultae) nuda; alae amplae, praelongae, caudae apicem attingentes; haec longula, aequalis; colli plumae elongatae, strictae, cuculli speciem formantes; color obscurus, metallicus.   Species: 1. Ger. calvus (Ib. calva Wagl. Syst. Av. sp. 11.) — 2. Ger. papillatus (Ibis papil. Tem. Pl. col. 304.) — 3. (Spec. nov. ex Aegypto, Gerontico calvo proxima.)"
