(Bucconidae; † Collared Puffbird B. capensis) L. bucca cheek, especially when puffed out “Brisson styles it Bucco from the fullness of the cheeks, Barbu from its bristles, a sort of beard, from which I form the generical name Barbet” (Pennant 1773); "BUCCO, nom donné à ce genre par Brisson, à cause du renflement de sa mandibule à sa base, de bucca (joue)" (Cuvier 1817) (Bucco was originally applied to the toucans and barbets because of the fullness of their cheeks, but latterly to the puffbirds because, “the disproportionate size of the head is rendered more conspicuous by the bird raising its feathers so as to appear not unlike a puffball” (Newton & Gadow 1896)); "Bucco. Genus 49. ... Genus Bucconis (1) ... (1) Bucco, nomen a me huic generi impositum a buccarum sive genarum & capitis crassitie. ... Le Genre du Barbu (1) ... (1) J'ai donné à ce genre le nom de Barbu, à cause des plumes roides & en forme de poils, dont la bâse du bec des especes de ce genre est garnie, & qui forment une espece de barbe" (Brisson 1760); "Bucco Brisson, Orn., 1, 1760, p. 42; 4, p. 91, 92.
