-phagos -eating < φαγειν phagein to eat; "Musophaga. Nomen "Musophaga" male quidem formatum, ut hybridum, significat: fructum Musæ paradisiacæ comedentem. Nomen vero "Musa", etsi hac significatione barbarum, in re botanica antiquitus acceptum, quare nomen quoque Musophaga, in Ornithologia diu usitatum, tolerandum est, etsi re vera; Musas, i.e. Deas artium comedentem significet." (Sundevall 1872); "Er gehört zu den Spechtartigen und ist den Geschlechtern der Crotophaga und Trogon verwandt. ... Die generischen Kennzeichen würden folgende seyn: Musafresser. Musophaga. ... No. 1. Der violette Musafresser. Musophaga violacea. .... Er lebt, so weit wie ich habe erfahren können, allein von den Früchten der Musa paradisiaca und Sapientum."
