Ils voient parfaitement dans l'obscurité et peu pendant le jour. La plupart ont au-devant de la tête une sorte de collerette de plumes sans barbules qui leur tient lieu d'oreilles externes.   ...   2. Les ducs (bubo) sont les espèces de chouettes à oreilles de Linné.   ...   Ces oiseaux ne se nourrissent que de petits animaux, qu'ils épient à la manière des chats. La plupart ont les pattes couvertes d'un duvet laineux; et leurs pennes sont si molles qu'à peine entend-on le bruit qu'elles produisent en volant.
