(Procellariidae; Ϯ Common Diving-petrel P. urinatrix) Gr. πελεκαν pelekan, πελεκανος pelekanos  pelican; -οιδης -oidēs  resembling; the diving-petrels have distensible throat-pouches and broad-based, hook-tipped bills; "PREMIÈRE SOUS-DIVISION.  Doigts de devant entièrement réunis par une membrane.  OISEAUX D'EAU.  VINGT-DEUXIÈME ORDRE.  Bec crochu.  ...  80.  PÉLÉCANOÏDE. ● "The PELICAN-FOOTED TERN.  PELECANOPUS pelecanoïdes, Wagl.  Sterna pelecanoïdes, King, Nar. Voy. Austr. App." (G. Gray 1844) (syn. Procelsterna albivitta). 
● "STERNA PELECANOIDES, (n. s.)  ...  The hallux, or hind toe, of this bird appears to be more closely united to the fore toes, and to be situated more in front than is usual among the Terns: it is also to be observed, that the side of the nail of the middle toe is considerably dilated, although not serrated, similar to what is observed among the Pelecanidæ.  These characters offer a corroboration of the affinity of the Sternæ to the family of the Pelecanidæ, and particularly to the genus Phaëton, which approaches the Terns more closely than any other group of that family, in the smaller size of the membrane that unites the toes" (King 1826) (syn. Thalasseus bergii cristatus).
