(Accipitridae; Ϯ Lappet-faced Vulture T. tracheliotos) Gr. τοργος torgos vulture; "Familie: Hyäne. ... Sie sind äußerst stupid, nähren sich von Aas und repräsentieren bey den Säugthieren die Geyer. Gattung Hyaena Cuv. ... Diese Gattung repräsentiert die Gattung Torgos (Vultur auricularis) mihi. Man zählt mit Gewißheit nur eine Art hieher; sollte aber, wie Cuvier vermuthet, eine zweyte Art eristieren, so muß auch ein dem Vultur auricularis verwandter Vogel zu entdecken seyn. ... Diese Gattung [Crocuta] repräsentiert die eigentlichen Geyer, Vultur." (Kaup 1828); "Torgos Kaup, Isis, 21, 1828, col. 1144. Type, by monotypy, Vultur auricularis Daudin = Vultur tracheliotus Forster." (Peters 1931, I, 260). Kaup linked the large Lappet-faced Vulture with the hyaena genus Hyaena, associating the smaller vultures Vultur (= Gyps) with the hyaena genus Crocuta.
