DEFINITIONS
AUGASTES
(Trochilidae; Ϯ Hyacinth Vizorbearer A. scutatus) Gr. αυγαστης augastēs light-giver, radiant (of the moon) < αυγη augē light of the sun < αυγεω augeō to glitter; "AUGASTES SCUTATUS. Natterer's Vizor-bearer. ... ALTHOUGH Vieillot's appellation of superbus is undoubtedly the first that was applied to this species, I have been induced to give the preference to the far more appropriate one of scutatus, given to it by M. Natterer. I am aware that in so doing I am departing from the rule of priority, but I conceive that this departure is far preferable to continuing the use of a term which is equally descriptive of many other members of the family, and which would be more applicable to the far lovelier Augastes Lumachellus than to the present species" (Gould 1849); "Of all the species of Humming-bird hitherto discovered in Brazil, there is perhaps no one more beautiful in form and colour than the bird here represented" (Gould 1861); "Augastes Gould, Monogr. Trochil., pt. 1, June 1849, pl. [15] and text [= 4, pl. 221 of volume]. Type, by monotypy, Trochilus superbus Vieillot = Trochilus scutatus Temminck." (Peters, 1945, V, p. 125).
