(Psophiidae; Ϯ Grey-winged Trumpeter P. crepitans) Gr. ψοφος psophos noise, any inarticulate sound; "makes a strong noise with its mouth, which it answers by a different noise from its belly, as if it came from the anus" (Pennant 1773) (see Agami); "84. PSOPHIA. Rostrum cylindrico-conicum, convexum, acutiusculum, mandibula superiore longiore. Nares ovatæ patulæ. crepitans. 1. PSOPHIA. ... Habitat in America meridionali. Rostro mussitans respondet per anum." (Linnaeus 1758); "Psophia Linné, Syst. Nat., ed. 10, 1, 1758, p. 154. Type, by monotypy, Psophia crepitans Linné." (Peters 1934, II, 155). Linnaeus's Psophia comprised only one species.
