(Monarchidae; Ϯ Tahiti Monarch P. nigra) Specific name Muscicapa pomarea Garnot, 1828; "Nous ouvrons la Famille des MUSCICAPIDES par le groupe des Mélanornithés, grandes espèces plus ou moins noires, à bec étroit et à longues pattes, qu'il vaudrait peut-être mieux élever au rang de sous-famille sous le nom de Monarchinæ.   ...   Pomarea, Bp., en diffère à peine, contenant des Monarcha presque aussi changeants, à pattes plus allongées que chez les typiques, telles que Muscicapa nigra, Sparrmann, etc." (Bonaparte 1854) (see Metabolus); "Pomarea Bonaparte, 1854, Compt. "Les auteurs ont décrit sous deux noms différents un gobe-mouche que nous avons appelé muscicapa Pomarea (Atlas, pl. XVII), en l'honneur de Pomaré, chef des îles de la Société, et dont le gouvernement sauvage était empreint d'une sorte d'élévation. Cette espèce de gobe-mouche se trouve décrite, le mâle, sous le nom de muscicapa nigra, figuré planche XXIII, Fasc. I, du Museum Carlsonianum de Sparrman, tandis que la femelle est le type du muscicapa lutea de Latham" (Lesson & Garnot 1829). This bird was collected during the voyage of 'La Coquille' 1822-1825, so must have been named either after Tû-Tû-nui-'ē'a-i-te-atua Pōmare II King of Tahiti (1774-1821; reigned 1803-1808, 1815-1821) who converted to Christianity (1819), or his son Teri'itari'a Pōmare III King of Tahiti (1820-1827), a minor (baptized 1820) who ruled under a Council of Regency 1821-1827 (‡Pomarea).
