M. Cabanis changed this name to Habropyga in 1847, while Loxigilla of M. Lesson (1830) is synonymous. It embraces Pytelia of Mr Swainson (1837), and Neochmia of MM. Hombron et Jacquinot  ...  40. E.? phæton (Homb. & Jacq.) Voy. au Pole Sud, t. 22. f.3 - Type of Neochmia Homb. & Jacq." (G. Gray 1849); "ERYTHRURE PHAETON . - ERYTHRURA PHAETON  ...  Cette espèce a été rapportée de la Nouvelle-Hollande (Rafles Bay): nous n'en donnerons pas la description, car elle nous semble avoir présentement acquis droit de domicile dans la science. Elle nous paraît devoir être placée dans le genre Erythrura, et nullement, comme le fait M. Gould, dans le genre Estrelda. Le bec est plus gros, plus développé que dans ce dernier type. Nous avouons cependant que, sous le point de vue de la brièveté des tarses, il y a à examiner de nouveau ce Conirostre qui, par ce caractère, nous semble assez isolé de ses congénères. Si cette disposition est constante, nul doute que le genre Neochmia ne doive être adopté" (Hombron & Jacquinot 1853).

Phaëthon, the disobedient son of Phoebus or Sol, the Sun, and the Oceanid Clymene); “Linnaeus bestowed upon it the generic term  ...  in allusion to its attempts to follow the path of the sun” (Newton & Gadow 1896) (see Phaetusa); "67. PHAËTHON.  Rostrum cultratum, rectum, acuminatum. Fauce pone rostrum hiante.  Nares oblongæ, postice membrana semitectæ.  Digiti postici antrorsum versi.  ...  Habitat in Pelago inter tropicos." (Linnaeus 1758); "Phaëthon Linné, Syst. Nat., ed. 10, 1, 1758, p. 134. Type, by subsequent designation, Phaëthon æthereus Linné (Gray, List Gen. Bds., 1840, p. 80.)" (Peters 1931, I, 77). Linnaeus's Phaethon comprised two species (P. æthereus, P. demersus).

Female eponym; dedicatee not yet identified; "Siamo incerti se questi due esemplari siano da riferire veramente alla N. phaeton o ad una nuova specie.  Noi li abbiamo confrontati con un maschio adulto del Capo York, avuto in comunicazione dal Conte Turati  ...  Resta ad ogni modo la differenza nelle dimensioni e nel caso che un maggior numero d' individui abbia da mostrare che quelli della Nuova Guinea differiscono specificamente da quelli del Capo York, proponiamo per essi il nome di Neochmia evangelinae." (d’Albertis and Salvadori 1879, Ann. Mus. Civ. Genova, 14, p. 89); perhaps after a relative of the Conte Turati, who brought the specific differences of this finch to the attention of the authors (Neochmia).
