Synon. Afrocolinus, Perdicideus.

Onomatopoeic name “Coqui” given to the Coqui Francolin by A. Smith; "The names given by the Natives to the objects above described, I have adopted as the trivial ones" (A. Smith 1836).  Clinning 1989, however, suggests the epithet may be an eponym, after Mr Coqui, apparently a well-known character on the eastern frontier of Cape Colony in the early 1800s (although the formation of the epithet mitigates against this) (Peliperdix).
