(Trochilidae; Ϯ Bronze-tailed Comet P. caroli) Gr. πολυωνομος poluōnomos having many names (i.e. generic names) < πολυς polus much; ονομα onoma name; "Die vierte von Gould (Introd. Troch. p. 104. 198) zu Cometes gestellte Art Trochilus Caroli Bourc. (Proc. Zool. Soc. 1847. p. 45. — Id. Rev. Zool. 1847. p. 260) hat nun schon die Genera Trochilus, Hylocharis, Calliphlox, Avocettinus und Cometes rastlos durchwandert und ist nun so bei der fünften Gattung angelangt; doch muss sie auch von dieser nochmals verstossen werden, um als Typus einer selbstständigen sechsten nach so langern Irrfahrten endlich Ruhe zu finden unter der von πολυωνυμος (vielnamig) entlehnten Benennung Polyonymus Caroli." (Heine 1863).
