(Ptiliogonatidae; Ϯ Black-and-yellow Phainoptila P. melanoxantha) Gr. φαεινος phaeinos brilliant < φαινω phainō to shine; πτιλον ptilon plumage; "PHAINOPTILA, gen. nov. 4 Rostrum debile, angustum, glabrum, valde aduncatum, maxillæ apice dentato: nares apertæ: setæ rictales breves. Alæ rotundatæ: remex primus longus, dimidium secundi æquans. 2.< 3.< 4=5., 4. et 5. longissimi. Acrotarsi breves, itegri, sicut in gen. Turdus. Ptilosis mollis sicut in gen. Ampelidarum. Typus et species unica PHAINOPTILA MELANOXANTHA, sp. n. Nitente nigra, pectore et abdominis lateribus cum crisso olivaceis, ventre medio ardesiaco: hypochondriis et dorso postico lætissime flavis: rostro et pedibus nigerrimis. ... The wing-formula is quite that of Ptilogonys, to which genus the glossy plumage and some of the characteristics of the coloration suggest an affinity; and these characters have induced me to place Phainoptila for the present near Ptilogonys in the family Ampelidæ. ... 4 φαεινος, splendens, et πτιλον, pluma." (Salvin 1877).
