(Parulidae; Ϯ Black-and-white Warbler M. varia) Gr. μνιον mnion seaweed (doubtless an error for μνιοεις mnioeis moss); τιλλω tillō to pluck; "Vieillot wrote sometimes mniotilta, sometimes mniotilla. The conjectured application is to the weaving of moss into a nest." (Coues 1882); "MNIOTILTE, Mniotilta. Motacilla, Lin. Sylvia, Lath. Bec court, grêle, droit, entier, comprimé; mandibules égales, aiguës. — Pouce grêle, alongé. Esp. Figuier varié, Buff. ... Mniotilta [μνιον, muscus, τιλλω, vello]."
