DEFINITIONS

MAGUMMA
(Fringillidae; Ϯ Anianiau M. parva) Olson 2006, suggested that this name is a cryptic anagram of the Greek letters γαμμα gamma G, and μυ mu M, representing Gregory Mathews’s initials (cf. Pratt 2005: “Meaning of genus name not stated by its author (Mathews 1925), and it appears not to have classical connections; possibly a patronym.”); "Magumma, gen. nov.  Type, Himatione parva Stejneger, 1887.  Perkins, Fauna Hawaiiensis, pt. vii. 1904, made for this a new genus Rothschildia, but this name is pre-occupied for a genus of moth, so the above is necessary." (Mathews 1925) (cf. Gummyza).  Like most Hawaiian drepanids, the Anianiau has had a switchback taxonomic history, but is now considered to be without close relatives.
