DEFINITIONS
CRYPTOSPIZA
(Estrildidae; † Red-faced Crimsonwing C. reichenovii) Gr. κρυπτος kruptos hidden, obscure; σπιζα spiza finch < σπιζω spizō to chirp; "Cryptospiza, nov. gen. Cryptospiza nov. gen. SPERMESTINARUM subfamiliae. Rostrum conicum, mediocre; pedes validiusculi, digitis longis; ala mediocris, subrotundata, remige prima sexta subaequali, tertia et quarta longioribus et aequalibus; cauda breviuscula, subrotundata, rectricibus duabus mediis pogoniis diffractis. Sp. 196. Cryptospiza reichenowi (HARTL.) .... Non conosco alcuna species cui questa somigli, per cui ne ho fatto il tipo di un nuovo genere, che forse deve essere ravvicinato ai generi Spermospiza e Pyrenestes, sebbene abbia il becco molto meno robusto. Un carattere conspicuo tanto nel nuovo genere Cryptospiza, quanto in quei due è la notevole lunghezza delle dita. Hartlaub afferma che questa specie è una tipica Pytelia, la quale cosa non mi sembra esatta, avendo le specie di quel genere becco più lungo e dita molto più brevi."
